Eight courses, and honest notes on which ones you can actually play.
This is the one we get asked about most, and the one where bad information does the most damage. Half the good golf in this metro is invitation-only, so we've labeled every course below. We're Riverchase members ourselves, so we'll tell you straight what a membership actually takes — start here if you're weighing joining one.
Ross Bridge
The eleventh stop on the Robert Trent Jones Trail, open since April 2005. At 8,191 yards from the tips it's among the longest courses on earth. Anyone can book a tee time.

Club membership
What joining a club here actually means.
Half the people who ask us about a house near a golf course are really asking a different question: can I play it, and what does that cost me? “Private” is doing a lot of heavy lifting on the badges above, so here's the plain version — the four kinds of club in this metro, plus two things worth settling before you sign anything.
Public & municipal
No membership, no sponsor, no interview. Ross Bridge is a resort course on the Robert Trent Jones Trail and Ballantrae is Pelham's municipal track. If you want to live near golf but have no interest in dues, buying next to one of these is the whole answer.
Private, non-equity
You pay an initiation fee and monthly dues, but you don't own a piece of the club and you aren't on the hook for its operating shortfalls. Riverchase works this way — the club states plainly that as a non-equity club, members are not assessed operating expenses. This is the most common way families here get into golf.
Member-owned / equity
The members own the club, so they vote on the big decisions and they fund them. Hoover Country Club is the local example. More say in the direction of the place, more exposure when the clubhouse needs a roof. Ask what assessments have looked like recently.
Invitation only
No application to download. Shoal Creek and Old Overton are in this tier — you get in because existing members put you up. Buying the house does not get you the membership, and anyone who implies otherwise is selling you something.
The waitlist question
Some categories at the desirable clubs have a wait, and it is not always the same length for golf, sports and social. If your plan depends on playing the course, get the current wait in writing from the membership director before you go under contract on the house next to it.
Reciprocity, honestly
Riverchase and Inverness are both owned by Heritage Golf Group, and Heritage golf members can opt into Heritage Plus, a paid upgrade that opens up play across the Heritage network nationwide. It's real, and it's an upgrade you elect — not something a standard membership includes. Worth pricing if you travel.
Where we actually sit, so you can weigh what we tell you. We're members at Riverchase, in Hoover, where we live. We're separately members at McLemore, in Georgia, where our cabin is. The two clubs have nothing to do with each other — we just happen to belong to both, and neither one pays us anything to say so. We aren't on any membership committee and we can't get you in anywhere. What we can do is tell you which club fits how your family actually spends a Saturday, warn you when a house is priced as if the membership came with it, and point you at the right membership director instead of a contact form. Trails & parks
Birmingham is a mountain town that forgot to tell anybody.
Two of these are reclaimed mining land, which is a very Birmingham thing to be. Between them there are well over a hundred miles of trail inside thirty minutes of downtown.
Oak Mountain State Park
Alabama's largest state park, twenty miles south of downtown. Over a hundred miles of trail — including the IMBA Epic–rated Red Trail — plus lakes, beaches and a golf course.

More than 1,500 acres along the old iron-ore ridge, minutes from downtown and free to walk into. Remy's is a six-acre off-leash dog park, which sells the whole place for some buyers.

A 1,038-acre preserve on a reclaimed limestone quarry with eleven-plus miles of hiking-only trail and a nature center. Five dollars to park, and it's dark on Mondays.

Nineteen acres of green in the middle of downtown, free and open 7am to 11pm since 2010. Regions Field is right across the street. This is the walkable-loft search.

We keep this list short on purpose. The metro has lost several breweries in the last two years, so we only point you at rooms we've confirmed are still pouring. If you want to be able to walk to one, that narrows a home search fast — and usefully.
Avondale Brewing
Brewing out of an 1885 building on 41st Street South, with a dedicated sour room and an outdoor stage that pulls genuine touring acts. Avondale grew up around it.

Alabama's oldest and largest brewery tapped its first keg on the Fourth of July, 2008. It sits directly across from Regions Field, so it doubles as the pre-game.

Fifty-one thousand square feet inside the historic Continental Gin complex, with twenty-six-plus taps and a room big enough to host a night bazaar. Dog-friendly, loud, fun.

A good independent coffee shop is a leading indicator. Where one opens, a walkable street usually follows — and so do the values. Birmingham now puts two shops on the World's 100 Best Coffee Shops list, which is two more than a city this size has any business having. These are the pockets worth searching around right now.

The densest cluster in the metro. O.Henry's has held 18th Street since 1993, Domestique's Dawn Patrol ranked 43rd in the world in 2026, Seeds has been roasting since 2010, and Caveat runs the drive-thru.

Michelin came to Birmingham and left with eleven listed restaurants, four of them Bib Gourmands — the value award. There are four James Beard medals in this town. We're grouping these by district rather than by restaurant, because when you're buying a house what you actually want to know is which five-minute radius eats the best.
Downtown
Rob McDaniel cooks over a live-fire hearth at Helen and was a 2026 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Chef. Next door, his raw bar Bayonet made Eater's Best New Restaurants in America. La Fête and Pizza Grace are both walkable from the same corner.

Adam Evans won the 2022 James Beard for Best Chef: South at Automatic Seafood, in an old sprinkler factory. Chris Hastings won the same award in 2012 and runs Hot and Hot Fish Club — 30 years in 2025 — plus OvenBird's two wood ovens across the lot.

Frank Stitt opened Bottega's dining room in 1988; it was a 2026 James Beard finalist for Outstanding Hospitality. Chez Fonfon, his 2000 bistro, still makes the burger people argue about. Fair warning: Highlands Bar & Grill has stayed closed since 2020.

Johnny's is a Greek-influenced meat-and-three from the Hontzas family and one of the highest-rated rooms in the metro. Gianmarco's has been family-run in Edgewood since February 2003. Both are a walk from a good school and a sidewalk.

SAW's Soul Kitchen does pork and greens over cheese grits and smoked chicken with white sauce, a few doors from the brewery. Avondale has turned over fast — this one has held.

Continental Bakery has been baking since the mid-1980s and shares a courtyard with Chez Lulu, the European bistro beside it since 1995. Both changed hands in 2025 and both are still going.

We keep this current, and that matters more than it should. Since 2024 the metro has lost Post Office Pies, Rodney Scott's, Satterfield's, Savage's Bakery after 87 years, Queen's Park, Marty's PM, roughly a dozen Pihakis restaurants, and six breweries. Every place named on this page was confirmed open before we published it. If you find one that isn't, tell us and we'll fix it that day.
Cocktails
Six bars that will make you a drink, not pour you one.
Almost all of it is downtown and Southside, which is a real argument for a loft or a Five Points bungalow if that's your night out. If it isn't, it's an argument for living fifteen minutes away with a driveway.
The Collins Bar
Open since 2013 and Birmingham's first bar built purely around cocktails. There is no printed menu — you tell the bartender what you like and they build it. The periodic table behind the bar is the landmark.

Co-owner Eric Bennett was a 2026 James Beard semifinalist for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service. The whole menu shifts to a new part of the world two or three times a year — that's the drift.

An agave bar built to feel like Mexico City, and it has been named one of the best tequila bars in the country. Open until 2am Friday and Saturday.

Won Best Cocktail in Birmingham at the 2025 Magic City Cocktail Competition. Open in Lakeview since November 2018, with a rotating local-flavor program and a patio.

Opened December 2018 in the old Tavern on 1st space. Happy hour runs weekdays until 6 with six-dollar cocktails, which is the most civilized thing downtown.

Left Morris Avenue in 2025 after twelve years and reopened that October inside The William on 3rd Avenue North. The bartop is antique marble the owner sourced and cut himself.
